A soldier inspects a downed German airplane in the barb-wired battleground of the trenches. Biplanes formed the backbone of the German air force, although aircraft manufacturers experimented heavily with the number of wings they could apply, to achieve the best possible flight characteristics. Fokker, a Dutch manufacturer working for the German forces, built anything from a monoplane to a 'quintu-plane' - five wings, of which two were attached to the rear of the plane's body.
