Exploring the Desert
'Exploring the Desert' is an official concept artwork for Battlefield 1, the video game created by EA DICE. The artist is DICE Senior Concept Artist Robert Sammelin. This limited edition Certified Art Gicleeâ„¢ print is part of the official Battlefield 1 fine art collection by Cook & Becker and EA DICE.
World War I was, by definition, a world-spanning affair. To cover the conflict from multiple angles, Battlefield 1 offers the player a range of war theatres. In this impressionistic Battlefield 1 concept art work, EA DICE Senior Concept Artist Robert Sammelin explores the tonality, atmosphere, and dynamics of horseback fighting, arab costumes, and the violent shattering of desert rock formations. The image may look exotic to Western eyes, yet the Middle-East was thick with fighting, and yielded at least one story that resonated with Western audiences: T.E. Lawrence's description of the Battle of Aqaba, where Arab troops on horseback took a naval base in Jordan after crossing a barren desert. Immortalized by 1962's movie 'Lawrence of Arabia', the raid on Aqaba is just one of many examples of World War I beyond the trenches.
