Trench Soldiers
'Trench Soldiers' is an official concept artwork for Battlefield 1, the video game created by EA DICE. The artists are Senior Concept Artist Robert Sammelin and Concept Artist Nicholas Shardlow. This limited edition Certified Art Gicleeâ„¢ print is part of the official Battlefield 1 fine art collection by Cook & Becker and EA DICE.
"What a slaughter", French lieutenant Alfred Joubaire wrote about trench warfare. "Hell cannot be this dreadful". The sentiment is reflected in this great Battlefield 1 concept art work by Nicholas Shardlow and Robert Sammelin, where German soldiers in gas masks silently appraise the viewer. Nerve gas attacks were a novelty for those fighting in the trenches, and gas masks became the perfect visual metaphor for the hellish reality of the Great War. 'Popularised' by the avant-garde visual art of DADA and Surrealists after the war, the gas masked soldier was soon adopted as a visual shorthand for death, destruction and sub-human behaviour.
